Year 1

Our final topic of the year is The Seaside.

We will be looking at maps of Southwold and thinking about the types of activities people like to do when they visit the seaside.

We have a very exciting school trip coming up where we actually get to spend the day at Southwold! We will look at the colourful beach huts, make some wonderful sandcastles, visit Gun Hill and maybe have an ice cream too!

In our DT lessons we will be designing and then making a move seaside picture.

The Owls and Puffins have had a great school trip to visit the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts at UEA.

We went inside the gallery and looked at lots of different pieces by artists such as Henry Moore and David Hockney.

We also did part of the sculpture trail outside and saw amazing sculptures by Lynn Chadwick, Elisabeth Frink and Anthony Gormley. Sometimes we even tried to make the same poses as the sculptures!

Year 1 have started a new topic all about Space.

We have heard that the European Space Agency are looking for people that would like to train to be an astronaut.

We are busily making Astronaut Application packs that show that we have the qualities that are needed.

So far we have written questions about Space that we would like to answer, designed our own constellations of stars and made some fantastic alien sock toys!

In our science topic, we learned about the best materials to use to make a soft toy – materials that were soft, flexible and opaque. Then we were creative and designed our own soft toys made from socks. We had a lot of fun finding the best materials to make legs, wings and antennae!

Year 1 have been creative by making beautiful poppy tea light holders out of clay. We made pinch pots and then used some sculpting tools to add the fine details. Finally, we painted them red and black – they look magnificent!

They form part of a whole school Remembrance display focussing on the brave soldiers who have served for our country and those who are still in service now. There are information and story books available alongside a space for the children to be reflective.

Year 1 have had our first school trip of the year.

We went to the Dinosaur Park and had a roartastic time!

The children have settled really well into Year1. We have started our first topic which is about Dinosaurs.  The children have been getting creative making observation paintings of dinosaurs and working collaboratively to make their own dinosaur using their footprints.  We are all looking forward to our school trip
